Switch actuator

Do switch actuators only differ in the number of channels? If you would like to know what you should consider before buying a switch actuator, we have put together some helpful information for you in the following article. The possibilities are therefore very extensive and actuators from the eibabo® range take on very central control and switching functions. But what exactly does that mean? We clarify.

Briefly summarized

  • Switch actuators are components of modern building automation.
  • You can plan these in the new building, retrofit them in the old building and use them flexibly if you are renting.
  • It is possible to digitally network and switch almost all devices and components of building technology.
  • Switch actuators are parameterized with the standardized ETS software.
  • Private areas of application are, for example, switching operations on lamps, sockets, household appliances, entertainment devices and kitchen appliances.
  • In the commercial sector, for example, you switch access systems, escalators, revolving doors and so on.

How does a KNX switch actuator work?

Every bus system consists of actuators and sensors. KNX actuators are active switching elements or drive elements and are comparable to a conventional relay in which the coil is intelligently controlled by bus signals. This converts analogue or digital input signals into switching commands or drive commands. The KNX switching actuator also has its own intelligence in the form of a controller, the so-called 'KNX bus coupler'. You can recognize this controller by the red/black clamp.

What types of installation are available for KNX switching actuators?

KNX actuators are often also referred to as actuators or binary outputs. A distinction is made between classic switching actuators, dimming actuators, blind actuators, roller shutter actuators, heating actuators, analogue actuators and many others. There are actuators for installation in the electrical distribution, then you have the suffix 'REG' for modular installation device. Flush mount versions are labeled 'UP' for mounting in a mounting box or junction box. As a built-in version for integration in ducts or similar, 'EB' is specified as the mounting type. However, additional protection must also be taken into account for built-in versions depending on the installation.

The advantages of switching actuators

Everything under control – anytime and anywhere. Single-family houses or apartment buildings, an office building or other real estate can have complex structures. With switching actuators, you simplify the organization of recurring processes and at the same time ensure that nothing is forgotten, no errors occur and, ideally, time and energy are saved. For example, you can adapt your building's access system to office hours or make the heating output dependent on the prevailing outside temperature. Or use the option of being able to operate doors, gates or windows at the same time. This ensures safety, especially in commercial properties, and saves the facility manager a great deal of time. All switching actuators work efficiently and silently. You are free to choose the type of control. This can be done via buttons, remote controls, voice controls, via the Internet or using a smartphone app.

Classic application examples in everyday life

Allow tradesmen access to the building even when you are not on site. Automatically open all escape routes in case of danger or control your children's TV times. In conjunction with motion sensors or presence detectors, doors can be opened and closed or security lighting activated. As you can see, with a little creativity, the possible uses of a KNX switching actuator are almost endless.

In order to be able to use this potential optimally, it is necessary to know the extensive technical requirements. Which switching actuator do I need for my project and how do I avoid purchasing an unsuitable switching actuator? At eibabo® you will find actuators from brands such as ABB, Berker, Busch-Jaeger, Eaton, EIBMARKT, Eltako, Gira, Hager, Jung, Lingg & Janke, MDT, Merten, Siemens and Theben. Depending on their specifications, they are used for various automation systems. More detailed information can be obtained directly from the product. All KNX actuators offered by eibabo® are of the highest quality and can be purchased by both private and corporate customers. Delivery is worldwide.

What questions should I ask myself before starting the project?

  • Do I install one device or several?
  • Will more devices be added later?
  • What electrical loads and types of loads can be expected, especially when switching on?
  • How should the control be operated - via app, voice and / or button?
  • Are the devices switched individually or in groups?
  • Which logic should the switching actions follow?
  • and much more...

...accordingly, I have to consider the following things

  • the suitability of the planned or already installed cables and lines
  • circuit protection
  • the space required in the electrical distribution system
  • the type, number and distribution of control elements – for example buttons
  • and much more...

Which KNX switching actuator do I need for my project?

KNX actuators can be single-channel or multi-channel. For this reason, actuators can switch at least one or more different equipment such as lights, sockets or motors. There are also decisive differences between the manufacturers with regard to the software / application and the technical application. These include, for example, the integrated logics (e.g. staircase lighting function, delay functions, logic functions), the load capacity of the switching channels (6A, 10A, 16A) and the load type (resistive load, inductive load or capacitive load).

Each switching actuator is optimized for its respective area of application. The tasks of a heating actuator, for example, are linked to different parameters than those of a universal switching actuator. Everyone has their specific application / software. This eibabo® catalog is about the classic switch actuator. For additional information on heating actuators, shutter actuators or dimming actuators, please use the search function in our shop.

NOTE:

The application (software) of each actuator determines its special properties.

There are also differences in terms of functionality and expandability. Some models are designed as switch actuator main modules. These can later be supplemented with switching actuator extensions via jumper plugs and thus flexibly adapted to loads to be switched in the future.

recommendation

Download the descriptions and the application for the desired actuators from the manufacturer's website and compare the specifications.

Good planning is therefore a prerequisite. Only when you know what you want to switch with the required actuator can you choose a device that best meets your needs.

Is the resilience of an actuator important?

When selecting the right actuators, you should pay attention to the required loads on the one hand and the desired functional options that an actuator can offer on a manufacturer-specific basis on the other. Under no circumstances should you, for example, use an actuator with a maximum load capacity of 6A resistive load and 3A for capacitive loads for switching fluorescent lamps with electronic ballasts, since these devices have very high inrush currents (up to 100 A for 3-5ms) for a short time. This can lead to the contacts sticking together. For such loads, it is advisable to use C-load actuators.

Does it make sense to use a very heavy duty actuator for very light loads?

Please try to select the performance of your actuator as precisely as possible based on your needs. Very low loads on very heavy-duty C-load contacts can lead to wear because the self-cleaning effect no longer occurs. Actuators with a high load capacity of the channels also often require more robust relays with audible switching actions. This should be taken into account in particular when electrical distribution boards are installed in the vicinity of living spaces.

TIP:

Always choose a switching actuator with regard to its performance to match the respective installation.

This protects the technology and extends the service life. In the smart home area, multi-channel 10-16 ampere actuators for resistive loads are used most frequently.

Can I connect different phases to the KNX switching actuator?

Yes, you can connect different phases to the switching actuator, provided each channel is available separately on the device. In the case of devices with separate potential-free switching contacts, the different phases can be switched next to one another. Different residual current circuit breakers per channel are also possible. In contrast to this, however, operation with different voltages within an actuator is by no means permissible.

How do I define the individual switching parameters on the switching actuator?

At this point, many interested parties become pensive and begin to doubt whether they can 'program' a switching actuator themselves. It's actually not that difficult. The Engineering Tool Software (ETS) required for this is not really used for programming, but only the group addresses and parameters are assigned to the device.

What does ETS mean for KNX?

The engineering tool software is a necessary tool for configuring the functions when commissioning KNX devices. The software is only used for parameterization and can also be understood by laypersons with an interest in the logic of the KNX.

Programming knowledge is not required and you do not need to know any programming language. If you are interested in the rather simple logical connections of the KNX bus, you are quite capable of creating a project. Of course, more complex concepts require a certain amount of experience. We always recommend having the basic project created by an experienced system integrator. This gives you the option of later changing important parameters yourself very easily if this becomes necessary due to changes in everyday life.

What is the difference between binary input and binary output?

Switch actuators are also referred to as binary outputs. This designation is not wrong, because these are components that actually switch the connected electrical equipment like a classic light switch - often centrally in the control cabinet. Binary inputs, on the other hand, do not switch the current, but only pass on the signals from conventional operating devices to the KNX system for further processing in a logic module or other KNX participants.
