Power switches motor protect.

Do you want to protect an electric motor from damage caused by overload or short circuits and need a motor protection switch for this? In this catalog from the eibabo® shop, we present a wide variety of circuit breakers for reliable motor protection. Read here how to find the right device and what you should pay attention to when buying it.

Large machine parks are in operation, especially in industrial production. A correct function before and also after unforeseen events is of the utmost importance here. But even on a small scale, the electric motors used should function stably. For this reason, machines are protected against disturbances in the power supply and against overloads. Such errors occur, for example, due to improper maintenance, leaks, wear and tear or simple short circuits. Constant protection of the health and life of machine operators is just as important. Therefore, electricians and occupational safety specialists pay close attention to the implementation of all necessary measures to maintain business operations and protect employees. Motor protection switches are a component of such a safety package.

What is a motor protection circuit breaker?

The motor protection switch is a switching device for controlling the electric motor. The device serves to switch on, switch off and conduct current in the normal state of the circuit. The switch also has the task of automatically switching off the engine in emergency situations. The main function of motor protection switches is to protect devices from overload and short-circuit currents. When the rated current is exceeded, the circuit breakers shut off the power, ensuring the safety of electrical equipment and people.

What is meant by thermal and magnetic motor protection?

The tripping characteristic of a circuit breaker for motor protection is usually based on built-in thermomagnetic protection. This standard includes:

  • protection against short circuits via a magnetic circuit breaker
  • protection against overload by means of a thermal circuit breaker

TIP:

For safety reasons, we recommend always choosing a combined motor protection switch with both types of protection.

The magnetic circuit breaker for short-circuit protection must respond quickly in the event of a high current. This type of protection is precise, reliable and economical. Ambient temperature changes do not affect tripping characteristics. Compared to thermal circuit breakers, magnetic circuit breakers have more precisely defined trigger parameters. The magnetic circuit breaker uses an electromagnetic mechanism. This is dimensioned differently according to the respective performance specifications of the motor protection switch. When the current reaches a certain threshold, the circuit is immediately broken. As a rule, this is set in such a way that tripping only occurs at ten times or more than the normal operating current of the motor. This avoids tripping during normal engine starting.

The thermal circuit breaker for overload protection reacts with a delay because a motor usually draws a higher current when starting. This type of protection is one of the most reliable and economical types of protection for electric motors. These handle high starting currents and protect the motor from failures caused, for example, by a blocked rotor. The thermal overload protection works with a bimetallic strip. Deformation occurs when the bimetal is heated to a critical temperature by the current flowing to the motor. This indicates that the power consumption is continuously too high. The motor is under excessive load and may stall or otherwise fail. A special feature of thermal circuit breakers is their temperature compensation. In this way, a precise triggering behavior defined according to the respective calibration is guaranteed at different ambient temperatures.

What circumstances can cause a motor protection switch to trip?

A wide variety of faults can occur during the operation of an electric motor. It is therefore important to be aware of these dangers, assess the probability of failure and anticipate possible causes. In this way, a motor can be optimally protected. An electric motor can fail or be damaged under the following conditions:

  • Poor power quality due to high voltage, under voltage, surges, frequency change, incorrect installation or malfunction of the electric motor itself
  • Gradual increase in temperature or reaching and exceeding the permissible limit values due to frequent switching on and off, insufficient cooling, high ambient temperature, reduced atmospheric pressure, high temperature of the working medium or excessive viscosity of the working medium
  • Sudden rise in temperature due to blockages in the motor drive or phase failure

Where are motor protection switches installed?

The most common motor protection switches are designed as built-in devices. Alternatively, depending on the model, it can be installed in the control cabinet on the DIN rail. Mounting directly on the machine is obvious, because a machine is usually switched ON and OFF via the motor protection switch. Manual power on is done by pressing the start button labeled 'I' or '1'. Depending on the version, this can also be a rotary switch. Manual shutdown is done by pressing the stop button or turning the switch position back to '0'.

What should be considered when selecting a motor protection switch?

Basically, when selecting a circuit breaker for motor protection, you should be guided by three criteria: the rated current, the overload current and the short-circuit current. The rated current of the machine is the maximum allowable current at which the circuit breaker can remain on indefinitely. However, it is of no use if the switch is correctly selected in terms of current rating, and the wiring does not withstand the load, melts and causes a short circuit. Choose the motor protection switch not only according to the nominal power of the machine, but also the cable cross-section and the quality of the wiring. Thermal overload protection suitable for your system and magnetic protection against short circuits should be considered on the same premises.

Notice:

With motor protection switches, a mechanical load on the device cannot be ruled out. The switches are therefore often made of very robust and self-extinguishing plastic.

When buying, make sure you choose a brand you trust. A motor protection switch must function reliably and, in an emergency, have the declared properties. This cannot be guaranteed without a doubt for no-name items. The price difference to a high-quality original is not that big when you compare the safety of man and machine. Therefore, opt for products from trusted manufacturers such as ABB, ABL, Condor, Eaton, Hager, Helios, Maico, Rockwell, Schneider Electric, Siemens and Stahl.
