Line backbone coupler - The area / line coupler connects two KNX lines with regard to the regulation of the data transmission and ensures a galvanic separation between the lines. This means that each KNX line can be electrically operated independently of the others. For each line, main line or area line a separate KNX power supply is required. Line couplers or area couplers are needed to create greater KNX topologies with a variety of KNX devices. The smallest topology is a line which is fed by means of a KNX power supply. A single line does not require a line coupler. Theoretically, 255 KNX devices could be integrated in a single line. Due to the average power reqiurement of KNX devices, cable lengths and other limit value definitions 64 KNX devices, i.e. devices with bus coupler, are defined as maximum per line. For a standard single-family house and optimum planning this is usually sufficient. When using a 640mA power supply, the device number may be significantly increased by means of line amplifiers. This function can also be carried out by line / area couplers (see product description). The newly constructed sub-line receives its own KNX power supply and is, for galvanic separation, connected via line amplifier with the existing line. Since the ETS (Engineering Tool Software) allows more than 64 devices per line, the devices of the sub-line can be considered as if they were part of the overlying line.
