Smartphone 3D-Holography

The trade magazine „Nature Communications“ has presented interesting, perhaps even disruptive technologies which might change the world considerably within a short period of time. An Australian-Chinese team has managed to use phase displacement of light to generate a gossamer nano hologram which could be incorporated in any mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets as well as TV sets or computers.

A special thin film layer to strengthen the required phase displacement applied to the screen permits an enormous extension of the available screen surface. The result of the first step would be a 2D holographic image hovering above the smart phone, considerably increasing the relatively small smart phone screen and, thus, providing much more information and data. Such an invention can and will change the whole market, particularly the market of web-enabled devices and even everyday life.

All technical requirements for online shopping will change with the availability of completely new standards for design and data integration. Just think of responsive design of websites and online shops or Google conformity. Using this 3D smart phone holography will be possible without 3D glasses. So far, there have only been gadgets but never any really sensible technical solutions. This could be changed soon by the researchers of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT, Australia).
